Regulated Activities

Industrial Fishing

The extractive activity is conducted by vessels with more than 18 m in length, with technological fishing systems such as trawling, long-line, and purse-seine. These systems allow massive catch of a wide variety of fishing resources. This activity is carried out within jurisdictional waters outside the exclusive reserve area for small-scale fisheries.

Sernapesca is also responsible for the Industrial Fisheries Registry (RPI), keeping a record of the shipowners that participate in the extractive processes of industrial fisheries since 1997, with natural and legal persons involved (the latter are divided into corporations and limited companies).

Until 2012, industrial fisheries were regulated by Law N° 19.713 of Maximum Catch Limit per Shipowner (LMCA) and its amendments. This allocation mechanism distributed the annual total allowable catch established for the industrial sector in each fisheries unit subject to a management system, among the shipowners registered in the respective fishery.

The current Law on Fisheries and Aquaculture N° N°20.657 replaced the LMCA, allowing shipowners to opt for changing their fishing authorizations to A-class Tradable Fishing Licenses (LTP).

With the new legislation for fisheries and aquaculture, tendering procedures for industrial fisheries for a 20-year period are established. These procedures are renewable with expiration grounds, divisible, transferable and subject to legal transactions.
